Composer guide · four steps

Composer workflow, step by step

Register the Creative Commons work you control, review each possible use against the available evidence and the licence you selected, then decide whether to save a proposal or another follow-up.

  1. Start with your catalogue

    Register the Creative Commons track

In your signed-in workspace, open Music library and choose Upload New Track. Add an audio file or audio URL, then enter the composer name, the track’s attribution URL, and the Creative Commons licence that actually applies to the work. Use the licence and attribution details published for that recording or composition; check them again if you later edit the track record.

After submission, check the library for its processing and monitoring status. If a track cannot be fingerprinted or monitoring does not start, resolve that status before relying on it as a monitored record.

    Open your music library
  2. Check before deciding

Review a potential use against the evidence and licence terms

Open Detections and select a potential use to see its evidence detail. Start with the source URL, platform, date and matched track. Where available, inspect the match details and listen to the relevant passage yourself. Check that the recording or composition is the same version you registered, rather than relying on a title or match score alone.

    • Confirm the work and sourceCompare the identified track with the material at the saved source, and note any gaps or uncertainty.
    • Read the permission recordCheck the registered Creative Commons terms, attribution requirements and any other permission you have granted.
    • Check who controls the rightsConsider co-writers, publishers, labels, samples or other agreements before proposing terms or taking formal action.

A detection can be mistaken, incomplete or covered by permission. It is a starting point for your review, not a finding of infringement. Record what you checked and keep the source details with your decision.

  3. If you want to discuss permission

Save a licensing proposal against the reviewed use

From the detection’s evidence detail, use Licensing proposal to record the intended use, proposed term, fee in GBP, and the conditions you want included. Save it as a draft, then download the proposal PDF if you need a copy to discuss or send outside LicenseTrack.

The status is a record you control: after you send the proposal elsewhere, you can record it as sent; record it as accepted only after the relevant parties have agreed. Marking a proposal as sent does not send an email from LicenseTrack.

  4. Keep the next action visible

Manage follow-ups from one review queue

Open Follow-ups to revisit saved licensing proposals and manually recorded takedown follow-ups. Each item links back to the related evidence so you can re-check the source and update your next step with the record in front of you.

Keep proposal and follow-up statuses accurate as conversations progress. The queue reflects saved records; it does not itself mean a notice was submitted, a licence was completed or payment was made.
